Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary Application 2024: How to Apply

Vulamathuba Empumelelo is now inviting students to apply for their bursary programme for the 2024 academic year. The bursary is targeted at students who live in the Cape Metro Region (Cape Town) for undergraduate studies within fields on the scarce or critical skills list.

Vulamathuba Empumelelo, the community and social development arm of Communicare, promotes social cohesion, supports the vulnerable and provides economic mobility interventions to Communicare tenants and neighbouring communities.

About Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary

This bursary covers the costs for studies (excluding postgraduate) at a recognised and accredited South African tertiary institution, with a maximum value of R45 000. These expenses include:

  • Registration costs
  • Tuition (course fees)
  • Textbooks and other academic resource material relevant to the course
  • Examination fees, if applicable

The bursary recipients shall, for the duration of the funding, participate in community service or special project work assigned to them by Vulamathuba Empumelelo. After successful graduation, they are required to “work back” a portion of the bursary inside the Communicare group of companies or any other organisation nominated by it.

The Vulamathuba Empumelelo bursary is closing on the 31st of January 2024, so if you are interested in applying, make sure you submit your application on or before the closing date.

Application Requirements

For your application to be considered for the Vulamathuba Empumelelo bursary, you must meet up with the following requirements:

  • You must be a South African citizen OR have a Permanent Residency Permit/ Work Visa in South Africa
  • You must be living within the City of Cape Town
  • You must be between 19 and 50 years old
  • You must be currently in Grade 12 or have completed Grade 12
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards a qualification within the scarce or critical skills list (on a full-time or part-time basis)
  • You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
  • You must have proven financial need (this will be determined by a means test)
  • You must have a gross household income of NOT more than R350 000 per annum

Note that Preference will be given to students accepted to study at public institutions in the Western Cape.

How to Apply for the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary

In order to apply successfully, download the  Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary Application 2024. Fill in the form, then head over to the bursary application portal and upload your filled application form there. You will also be required to upload copies of the following documents:

  •  Identity document or Passport of the applicant.
  • Permanent Residency Permit or Work Visa details if Non-South African citizen.
  • Identity document, Passport, or Birth Certificate of a spouse, parents, guardians, and all other household members
  • Marriage Certificate if applicable.
  • Bank statements for three months of applicant, spouse, parents, guardians, and all other household members.
  • Death certificate if parent/s are deceased.
  • An affidavit explaining circumstances if the applicant is supported by someone not a parent or legal guardian.
  • Affidavit if applicant, parents, guardians, and any adult household members are unemployed.
  • Administration order, Court order, Divorce order, and Maintenance order, if applicable.
  • Proof of residence.
  • Most recent, three months’ proof of ALL income of the applicant, spouse, parents, guardians, and all other household members.
  • Proof of application/ registration with the tertiary institution or Letter of admission from the institution.
  • Latest academic results or qualifications of the applicant
  • Essay of at least 250 words to motivate your application

Note that these documents must be certified copies and must not be older than six months.
