SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary 2024 – How to Apply

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) is inviting matric and undergraduate students to apply for their 2024 bursary programme, so if you fall within this group, seize this opportunity and apply for this bursary.

About SAAFoST Bursary

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology Foundation is the association of food science, technology, and other professionals serving South Africa’s food and allied industries.

The SAAFost Foundation awards three different types of bursaries:

1.) Matriculant Bursary

This bursary will be awarded to students who are currently in writing matric/in grade 12, and are planning on a full-time study towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field. If you are interested in this one, check it out here.

2.) Undergraduate Bursary

This bursary will be awarded to students who are already pursuing full time studies towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field. The Bursary will cover the tuition fees of it’s recipient (Up to R40,000 per annum). This is the one we will be discussing.

3.) Part-time Bursary for SAAFoST Members

This bursary will only be awarded to SAAFoST paid up full members, studying part time studies towards a BSc Hons or BTech qualification, within the Food Science and Technology field. If you are interested in this one, check it out here.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be deemed eligible for the SAAFoST Undergraduate bursary, you have to meet up with the following requirements:

  • You must be a South African who has lived in South Africa for at least 3 years
  • You must be excelling academically/demonstrating potential
  • You must be enrolled for full time undergraduate study for a first degree or diploma in the field of Food Science and Technology at a South African Tertiary Institution, and be in a position to complete your chosen study programme within the timeframe given by your insitution or the following timeframe:
    Undergraduate Degree (up to B.Sc (Hons) – 4 years
    B. Degree – 4 years or Higher Diploma
    B. Degree – 3 years
  • You will be required to provide a written personal statement of not more than 1 A4 page outlining how their education and training in the field of food science and technology will make a positive difference in their lives and in the scientific community.
  • You will be required to submit a reference that speaks of the your character. The reference letter will be written by someone who has known you in a learning capacity for at least 3 years.
  • You must have been a member of SAAFoST for at least 12 months preceding the application.

How to Apply for The SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary

  1. Download the application form
  2. Fill in theapplication form
  3. Attach the required documents. They include:
    • A head and shoulders passport-size photograph of yourself
    • A certified copy of your ID book or RSA passport
    • A certified copy of your most recent academic results
    • Personal Statement (check the eligibility requirements, point 4)
    • Reference Letter (check the eligibility requirements, point 5)
    • Proof of registration at Tertiary Institution for 2024
