Nelson Mandela Bay municipality is now inviting students to apply for their bursary programme for the 2024 academic year. This bursary is open only to tertiary institution students who reside in either Gqeberha, Kariega or Despatch.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is situated within the Eastern Cape, on the shores of Algoa Bay, and covers Port Elizabeth, as well as the neighbouring towns Despatch and Uitenhage and nearby rural areas. The municipality is a global city that is governed by an inclusive and innovative administration, focused on sustainable service delivery, socio-economic development, infrastructure development, and local and regional integration through comprehensive initiatives.

About Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Bursary

Under the Corporate Services Directorate, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Skills Development and Employment Equity Sub-directorate is mandated to provide financial study assistance to academically deserving students with financial needs.

This bursary will cover the following expenses for its recipients; registration, tuition and book fees. The scarce and critical bursaries to be awarded have been identified by the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) and are the following:

  • National Diploma: Electrical Engineering
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • PGD: Development Finance
  • Bachelor of Internal Audit
  • Bachelor of Business Administration: Marketing
  • Advanced Diploma: Human Resource Management
  • Diploma in Journalism
  • Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication Design
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science
  • Bachelor of Arts: General
  • Bachelor of Graphic Design
  • National Diploma: Safety Management
  • Bachelor of Law
  • Masters: Business Administration
  • PGD: Business Administration
  • Postgraduate Diploma: Public Administration
  • Bachelor of Administration in Human Settlement Management
  • National Diploma: Horticulture
  • Bachelor: Mechatronics

For a student to be able to apply, they must be studying towards one of the following qualifications. This bursary addresses the critical skills and qualifications within the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality areas.

Eligibility Criteria

For an applicant to be considered eligible for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Bursary, they must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be residing in Gqeberha, Kariega and Despatch
  • Must be unemployed
  • Must have a proven financial need, with evidence required if shortlisted
  • Must have a minimum academic average of 60% in the 2023 academic year
  • Must have a minimum academic average of 60% for the required subjects aligned with the qualification they are studying towards, among the above listed.
  • Must have gained admission into a recognised and accredited South African public university for one of the qualifications listed above.
  • Must intend to study full-time within one of the above-mentioned qualifications.

How to Apply for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Bursary

Download the NMBM Application Form 2024, print it out,  fill it out completely, attach the required documents, and submit it to the office of Skills Development and Employment Equity, 15th floor, Starport Building, Govan Mbeki Avenue, Gqeberha. These are the following documents you are required to attach:

  • Certified Grade 12 Certificate
  • Certified Statement of Results
  • Acceptance Letter for Qualification from University
  • Certified copy of the Identity Document of the Applicant
  • Certified copy of the Identity Document of Parents or Guardian, if the applicant is a minor.
  • Motivation Letter of not less than 500 words and not more than 1000 words.
  • Course outline for the duration of the qualification
  • Course timetable for the duration of the qualification
  • Quotation from the Institution for the qualification you are applying for

All certified documents must not be older than six (6) months on the date of submission.

Closing Date

The council of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will stop accepting applications for this bursary after 23rd January 2024. Make sure you apply on or before the closing date so that your application can be accepted and properly vetted. For more information, visit nelsonmandelabay.gov.za
