About MQA Bursary

The Mining Qualifications Authority is a South African company that is responsible for administering a number of skills programmes and learnerships that aim to develop a skilled and educated workforce whose skills are recognized and valued in terms of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

The MQA bursary is available to students that have enrolled with universities, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, and universities of technology. The bursary scheme covers full tuition and registration fees; residence fees or out of residence living costs; books; stationery; and toolkit allowance per bursar per semester.

Eligible Fields of Study

1. The MQA bursary scheme only funds the following qualifications at universities and universities of technology:

  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Jewellery Design Manufacturing
  • Electro Mechanical Engineering
  • Geology
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Occupational Hygiene
  • Mine Surveying
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Operations Managements
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Quality Managements
  • Environmental Health and Management

The bursary is available for the following education levels associated with the above disciplines, namely: Undergraduate Degree, B Tech, Honours Degree, Master’s Degree and Doctoral Degree.

2. The MQA bursary scheme only funds the following qualifications at TVET colleges:

  • Boilermaker
  • Fitting (incl: Machinery)
  • Motor Mechanic (Diesel)
  • Instrumentation Mechanic
  • Electrician
  • Millwright
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Rigger Ropesman

The MQA may annually consider 20% of the bursary allocation to deserving unemployed and employed bursary applicants to study qualification outside of the list of qualification listed above.

MQA Bursary Requirements

For you to be considered eligible for this bursary, you have to satisfy the following requirements:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must have completed Matric
  • You must be currently employed within the Mining and Minerals sector (if you are employed)
  • You must be studying or been accepted to study within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • You must be studying or been accepted to study at a public University/ University of Technology in South Africa (NOT a private institution)
  • Preference will be given to students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, and according to academic performance, disability, gender and how well their qualification relates to the Mining and Mineral Sector

Required Documents

You have to attach copies of the following documents to your application form befor submitting it:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate (certified copy)
  • Full tertiary academic record, if currently at tertiary level (on official letterhead or logo/ stamped)
  • Proof of acceptance to study at a University/ University of technology/ TVET College, if a first time student
  • Consent letter from employer to apply for MQA bursary (on company letterhead and signed by supervisor)

Opening and Closing Date

The MQA Bursary opens on 8th August 2023 and closes on 30th September 2023. Applications submitted after the closing date will not be accepted, so make sure you apply on time.
