About JSE Empowerment Fund (JEF) Bursary

Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is the oldest and biggest stock exchange in Africa. It was established in 1887 during South Africa’s first gold rush. The organization formed The JSE Empowerment Fund (JEF) in order to support students and help them achieve their academic goals.

JEF Bursaries will be awarded to undergraduate or postgraduate students studying in one of these fields at select universities in South Africa:

  • Accounting
  • Actuarial Science
  • Computer Science
  • Data Analytics
  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Informatics
  • Information Technology
  • Mathematics

Eligibility Requirements

You have to meet up with the following requirements if you want to be considered eligible for the JEF Bursary:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be studying full-time towards a degree qualification, within one of the fields of study listed above
  • You must be entering your 2nd, 3rd level of study in 2024 (undergraduate only)
  • You must be studying at one of these Universities in South Africa:
    • University of Pretoria
    • University of Johannesburg
    • University of the Witwatersrand
    • University of Cape Town
    • University of Limpopo
    • University of KwaZulu-Natal
    • University of the Free State
    • University of Fort Hare
    • Nelson Mandela University
    • North-West University
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 60%
  • You must have a total household income of NOT more than R600 000 per annum
  • You must be from the designated group
  • You must be from a previously disadvantaged background

How to Apply for JEF Bursary

Begin your application process by visiting the JEF Bursary application page, then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the apply button. You will be required to submit the following documents during your application:

  • Certified ID Copy
  • Proof of university registration
  • Academic Record
  • Proof of household income
  • Proof of residence

Closing Date

This bursary application is ending on the 31st of October 2023. Any application sent in for the JEF Bursary after this date will be rejected, so make sure you apply early.
