Gibela Bursary Programme 2024 – Apply Now

Gibela Railway is now inviting students to apply for their bursary programme for the 2024 academic year. This bursary is targeted at South African TVET college students in need of financial assistance and able to demonstrate the potential for academic success.

Gibela is a joint South African and French railway rolling stock manufacturer that was established in 2013 as an association between Ubumbano Rail, Alstom and New Africa Rail. The black economic empowerment company currently has an R51-billion contract with the South African government to manufacture 600 trains for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). The scope of the contract includes train maintenance, technical support and the manufacture and supply of spare parts.

About the Gibela Bursary

Gibela is awarding bursaries to TVET college students studying within one of the following fields:

  • Boiler-makers
  • Control and instrumentation technicians
  • Electricians
  • Fitters and Turners
  • Mechanics
  • Millwrights
  • Pattern-makers
  • Plumbers
  • Vehicle-builders
  • Welders

The bursaries last only one year and cover the tuition fees and book allowance expenses for its recipients. The bursaries are renewed based on satisfactory academic performance. Current N3 and N4 students are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

For an applicant to be considered eligible for the Gibela bursary, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have achieved a minimum result of level 4 for Mathematics, Science and English in Matric
  • Must be studying or have been accepted to study at a recognised and accredited Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College in South Africa
  • Must be studying or intend on studying towards a qualification, in one of the fields listed above, in 2024
  • You must have a strong academic record and be able to show potential for academic success
  • You must be in financial need

How to Apply for the Gibela Bursary

There is no application form to fill out for this bursary, just if you meet the eligibility criteria, you will submit copies of some documents to this email address [email protected]. These documents are:

  • Certified copy of South African ID document
  • Certified copy of your full academic records
  • Short CV
  • Parents or guardians’ proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed or informally employed/ proof of grant or pension if applicable)
  • Written proof of acceptance for admission from a TVET institution in South Africa (on institution letterhead)

Make sure to specify your reason for sending the documents in the email heading, i.e. you can put ‘Gibela Bursary Application 2024″ in the heading of the email before sending it.

Closing Date

Application for the Gibela bursary is closing on 2nd February 2024, any application sent in after this date will be rejected so make sure you apply on time before the bursary closes.
