GCRA Bursary Online Application 2024

The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) is inviting students to apply for their bursary for the 2024 academic year. The bursary is only open to undergraduate and postgraduate students who reside in Gauteng.

The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) is one of the branches of the Gauteng Department of Education.  It is a sector of the South African government which is responsible for skill development within Gauteng. The GCRA is responsible for building a pool of skilled, capable and ethical workforce through different interventions, like bursaries, internships, learnerships, skills programmes, etc.

About GCRA Bursary

The GCRA bursary programme is open to all qualifying youth, with particular preference given to youth from Gauteng, who wish to study for an undergraduate and/or post-graduate programme (in any field of study) at an accredited and registered Post School Education and Training institution in South Africa.

Students pursuing studies in GGT2030 priority sectors will be given preference over others. These sectors include: Art and Design, Finance, Economics and Accounting, Electrical Infrastructure Construction, Civil Engineering Construction, Hospitality Management, IT and Computer Science, Mechanical Automotive, Mechanical Automotive and Diesel Engineering, Tourism; Transport and Logistics

The bursary will cover the following expenses for its recipients:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation in residence (to a maximum value of R65,000) OR
  • Off-campus/ private accommodation (to a maximum value of R47,000)
  • Books
  • Laptop
  • Living allowance

Eligibility Criteria

For an applicant to be considered eligible for the GCRA Bursary, he/she must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a South African student
  • You must be residing in Gauteng
  • You must have completed matric (in Gauteng)
  • You must be between 18 and 35 years old
  • You must intend to pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification
  • You must have been accepted into an accredited tertiary institution including:
    • Public and private Universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, private colleges, Community Education and Training colleges and skills development providers.

Alternatively, applicants who meet the following requirements are already qualified for the bursary (must still apply):

  • You must be part of the top achievers at a Gauteng-based school
  • You must be part of the top 3 learners from no-fee paying Gauteng-based schools
  • You must be part of the top 3 learners from Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Gauteng-based school

How to Apply for GCRA Bursary

If you are ready to apply for the GCRA bursary 2024, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the application page
  2. Click the “Apply/Register” link
  3. Use your details to register an account
  4. Go back to the login page and log in with your new username and password

For your application, your personal information (address, contact), parents/guardian information, tertiary institution results and details, information about any other sponsors, and matric results will be requested from you. The following list tells you which bursary to apply for:

  • New Intake – You are applying to the GCRA bursary for the first time
  • Renewal – You were funded by the GCRA bursary in the previous year, and you are now reapplying
  • Reinstatement – Your bursary was suspended and you have now satisfied the conditions to have your bursary reinstated
  • Top Achievers – You are one of the top Achiever within Gauteng
  • Top 3 Achiever – You attended a no-fee paying school
  • Top 3 in LSEN – You attended an LSEN (learners with special educational needs) School
  • MEC/HOD Discretion – The MEC/HOD advised you to apply for a bursary
  • Veteran Discretion – You are a child of a Military Veteran
  • Financial Assistance – You have finances but require assistance
  • Top Ups – You have an existing bursary but need additional funding

Candidates shortlisted for this bursary will be contacted within 3 to 4 weeks after the application closing date, so if you do not receive any feedback 4 weeks after the closing date, please regard your application as unsuccessful.

Supporting Documents

You will be required to upload copies of the following supporting documents alongside your application:

  • South African ID document (Certified copy)
  • Proof of Gauteng residence (utility bill or letter from ward councillor)
  • Certified Matric Certificate and or latest academic results
  • Proof of income from parent(s) or guardian(s) or affidavit
  • Motivational letter on why you deserve this bursary (not more than 2 pages)
  • Proof of registration or acceptance letter from higher learning institutions
  • Disability or medical report (where applicable)
  • Proof of any other bursary you are currently receiving (where applicable)

Closing Date

The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) bursary is closing on 29 February 2024. Any application sent in after this date will be automatically rejected so make sure you apply on or before the closing date.
