NWU Postgraduate Bursary Scheme 2024 – Apply Now

North-West University (NWU) is now inviting postgraduate students to apply for their bursary scheme for the 2024 academic year. The bursary is targeted at outstanding postgraduate students studying at either NWU or another University.

North-West University is a higher institution that enables equity, redress and globally competitive teaching and research across all three of its campuses. NWU’s core activities, teaching-learning and research, are intertwined with community engagement and innovation in our eight faculties, most of which serve both distance and contact students.

About NWU Postgraduate Bursary

The North-West University bursary scheme is divided into honours, Master’s, and Doctoral bursaries. There is also an Academic Merit bursary which students from other universities can apply for. these are the details:

Honours Bursary

Value of Bursary: R24 000 per year

Who Can Apply?

Current NWU students and students from other universities who were accepted for honours studies at the NWU in 2024.

Master’s Bursary

Value of Bursary:

Full Time:  R30 000 per year
Part-Time: R15 000 per year

Who Can Apply?

Available only to students who register for a full prescribed Master’s Degree at NWU.

Doctoral Bursary

Value of Bursary:

Full Time: R32 500 per year
Part-Time: R16 250 per year

Who Can Apply?

Available only to students who register for a full prescribed Master’s Degree at NWU.

Application Requirements

For a student to be considered eligible for any of the bursaries in the NWU Postgraduate bursary scheme, he or she has to meet the following requirements:

  • You must be accepted to study any of the degrees at the institution
  • If you got your initial degree (bachelor’s) outside North-West University, you need to attach an academic record of the preceding qualifying degree.
  • Applicants must have achieved a minimum average of 60% for all last year’s modules of the preceding qualifying Masters degree.
  • Part-time and/or working students can apply for a 50% allocation of the bursary.
  • Bursary holders must complete the Doctoral degree within a minimum grace period of five (5) years
  • Students applying for the Master’s bursary from the second year of the degree must apply for the Master’s Progress Bursary
  • Students applying for the Doctoral bursary from the second year of the degree must apply for the Doctoral Progress Bursary

How to Apply for the NWU Postgraduate Bursary

If you meet the application requirements and you want to apply for any of these bursaries, you have to complete the application form and attach your academic report and/or the progress report attachment. This must be only one PDF document (all records scanned on one file). Any file or attachment sent through e-mail will not be accepted.

The bursary amount is repayable if a student terminates studies, or does not complete the course within the prescribed period.

Closing Date

The NWU postgraduate bursary scheme will close its applications on 31st March 2024. Any application sent in after this date will be automatically rejected.
