Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund South Africa 2024 – Apply Now

Athlone Institute Trust is now inviting students to apply for their bursary programme for the 2024 academic year. The bursary is targeted at South African, university students residing within the Paarl or Mbekweni area (Western Cape) OR parishioners at any of the 5 member churches of the Trust.

The Athlone Institute Trust (AIT) was established in 1926 when residents of the Paarl area recognised the need for Higher Educational facilities for coloured students. In 1998, the Bursary Project Committee was founded and later in 2006 became renamed to “The Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund (AIBPROF)”. Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund has since helped more than 1500 students with their tertiary studies.

About Athlone Institute Bursary

The Athlone Institute Bursary will be awarded to students who either live within the Paarl or Mbekweni area or are parishioners at one of the following churches of the institute:

  • St Stephen’s Anglican Church
  • Immanuel UR Church, Bethel
  • United Congregational Church (UCC)
  • Holy Trinity Anglican Church
  • Zions Uniting Reformed Church

Studies in any field, whether undergraduate or postgraduate will be accepted. The total value of this bursary will be determined by the trust, but it will provide cover for a portion of registration fees and tuition fees.

Eligibility Criteria

For an applicant to be considered eligible for the Athlone Institute Trust bursary, he/she must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a South African by birth
  • You must be a permanent resident of Paarl or Mbekweni, in the Western Cape province (or you must be a parishioner of one of the five-member churches of the Athlone Institute Trust)
  • You must be a member of one of the member churches of the AIT or a member of any bona fide denomination/ religious institution in Paarl or Mbekweni
  • You must have completed the Matric
  • You must be in financial need
  • You must be enrolled to study at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution (TVET College/ University/ University of Technology)
  • You must be enrolled to study towards an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification for the 2024 academic year (full-time only)
  • Your field of study must be accredited by the Council of Higher Learning
  • You must have passed your previous year of study if currently studying
  • You must be willing to take part in community service within the Paarl/ Mbekweni area, and the mentoring programme

How to Apply for the Athlone Institute Bursary

You can get a copy of the application forms at one of the following three locations:

  1. AIT member churches (listed in the ‘About’ section)
  2. Drakenstein Pharmacy (55 Jan Van Riebeeck Dr, Denneburg, Paarl)
  3. New Orleans High School (6 Suikerbos Ave, Charleston Hill, Paarl).

Fill in the application form completely and attach copies of the following documents before submitting:

  • Certified copy of your ID document
  • Certified copy of your Matric certificate
  • Certified copy of your Full academic record, if you are currently studying
  • Certified copy of your proof of registration at a tertiary institution
  • Proof of registration fee payment
  • Proof of residence
  • Parents or guardians proof of income (latest payslips if employed, affidavits if unemployed)
  • Official Testimonial from Your Religious Leader

Closing Date

The closing date for the Athlone Institute Bursary is on 29th February 2024. After this date, applications for this bursary will no longer be accepted. For more info, check out the bursar website.
