About Subtrop SAAGA Bursary
The South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA) is an association that is under another association called South Africa Subtropical Growers’ Association (Subtrop). The main goals of SAAGA are: to research the production and marketing of avocados, to provide recommendations regarding the after-harvest handling and distribution of avocados, and to encourage local marketing of avocados as well as export.
The Subtrop SAAGA bursary 2024 will be awarded to undergraduate and postgraduate students from historically disadvantaged groups who study for a BSc in Agriculture or equivalent degrees majoring in Horticultural Science Agricultural Economics, or Agribusiness.
The students who are awarded the bursary will be required to work for Subtrop for each year that the bursary is awarded. SAAGA will assist the student in finding a position within the company. Students must, wherever possible, focus their seminars and projects that they take part in on the avocado industry.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to be selected for the Subtrop SAAGA Bursary, you will have to satisfy the following requirements:
- You must be a student of colour
- You must have completed Matric
- You must be studying towards an Undergraduate or Postgraduate Agriculture or equivalent degree in Horticultural Science and related fields, or Agricultural Economics
- You must be studying at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution within South Africa
- You must read and agree to all of the terms stated on the application form

- Attach the required documents. They include:
- A motivation letter as to why you should be considered for the bursary
- Identity document
- Matric certificate
- University academic record
- A brief Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
- Details of any other bursary or scholarship which you may hold

NOTE: Applicants that have not been contacted by 31st December 2023 should consider their application unsuccessful. If a recipient does not pass the course for which the bursary has been awarded, he/she will be required to pay back the bursary over a period equal to the length of the bursary.
