The Department of Sports, Art and Culture (DSAC) invites students to apply for their bursary for the 2024 academic session. This bursary is targeted at students at institutions accredited and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training who wish to pursue studies in heritage-related programmes.
The Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) in South Africa aims to foster a vibrant, united nation through sports, arts, and cultural activities. Guided by values of equality and accountability, DSAC oversees sector development, legislation, heritage preservation, social cohesion, and information access. Governed by a robust legal framework and international treaties, DSAC plays a key role in nurturing cultural heritage and inclusivity while fulfilling international commitments in sports, arts, and culture.

About DSAC Bursary
This bursary will be awarded to Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies in one of the following heritage-related fields of study:
- Anthropology (exclusively with a focus on forensic/medical anthropology)
- Archaeology (exclusively with a focus on marine and underwater cultural heritage, and forensics)
- Archives and Records management
- Conservation of the built environment including preventive conservation (this includes only a field of study and not a course/subject of study
- Collections (cultural & natural) management (excluding Nature
Conservation) - Paleontology
- Museum Studies or Management and Curatorship
- IKS or Courses that contribute to the preservation and promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) and S.A. Living Heritage
- History
- Digital heritage
- Fine Arts
This bursary will cover the following expenses for its recipients (maximum value of R110,000 per student) :
- Tuition fees
- Prescribed books
- Electronic devices, not more than R10 000 (students must provide 3 receipts/ invoices)
- Accommodation, to the maximum amount of R50 000 (where applicable)
- Meals, to the maximum amount of R18 500 (where applicable)
- Transport, to the maximum amount of R10 000 (where applicable)
Note that these fees will be paid directly to the higher learning institution.
Eligibility Criteria
For an applicant to be considered eligible for the DSAC bursary programme, he/she must meet the following requirements before applying:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must not be older than forty (40) years
- Must have an outstanding/satisfactory academic performance (academic progress report if already at an institution) or (Grade 12 if you are a 1st year student)
- Must be studying within one of the following courses listed above
- Must not be employed full-time by government, state agencies or private sector with a salary of more than R350 000.
- Must not be a beneficiary of other bursaries or donors for the 2024 academic year UNLESS tuition fee at the said university or institution exceeds the DSAC’s threshold by at least 10% upwards
